The Huntsville Muskoka Kiwanis Club, charted by Rick Brooks, is celebrating 2 years on August 15, 2019. With a mandate to support youth and children, the Club’s major projects include the Maple Festival Kids, and the Ironman Kids Triathlon.
Among the work the Huntsville Muskoka Kiwanis Club has done in the community in the short time since being chartered is their contribution to the accessible playground at Huntsville Public school.
This summer Kiwanis Huntsville Muskoka has two major fundraisers:

“Swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, run 26.2 miles- BRAG FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE”

Originally a challenge issued in 1978 by Commander John Collins and his wife Judy, the Ironman is a series of 3 long distance triathlon races consisting of a swim, ride and run. The first Ironman took place in February 1978 with 15 competitors travelling to Waikiki.
The Subaru Ironman 70.3 Muskoka takes place this Sunday- July 7th beginning at 7:00am. Ironman Muskoka is known as a mid-summer race loved for its stunning beauty and naturally tough course. Participants will swim 1.2 miles in beautiful fairly lake, followed by a 56 mile bike ride through picturesque Baysville, and finishing up with a 13.1 mile run through historic Huntsville ending at the Huntsville Summit Centre. The race offers 40 qualifing spots in the 2020 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in New Zealand.

Canada Day in Lake of Bays and Huntsville
Celebrate Canada Day in Lake of Bays, Muskoka! The fun begins on Saturday June 29th in Baysville and Dorset, and continues through July 1st in Huntsville & Oxtongue. Below are just a few of the activities you can participate in this Canada Day.
Baysville: June 29th Canada Fireworks at the Dam Park at 9:00pm.
July 1st– Canada Day Breakfast at the Seniors Centre.
Dorset: June 29th –Canada Day Fireworks at the Waterfront, 9:00pm.
Port Cunnington: June 29th – At the Lake of Bays Marina, take in the water ski show at 6:30pm.
Lake of Bays: July 1st – At the Oxtongue Community Centre located at 3971 HWY 60. Celebrate Canada day with the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new pavilion, enjoy music, a bouncy castle, face painting, crafts, children’s games, a drum circle, BBQ, silent auction and more. Admission is free.
Huntsville: July 1st- 9:00am- 11:00am free admission to Muskoka Heritage Place.
Noon- At the Rotary Village Station the annual steam up of the Portage Flyer Train, take a ride to Fairy Lake (small charge may apply).
1:00-7:00pm – At historic River mill Park, take in a free “Canada Fest Concert” presented by Hunters Bay, 88.7 FM Radio
10:00pm- Canada Day Fireworks over Hunters Bay.

Kick off this summer with a cruise on the SS Bigwin! Made primarily of Mahogany, Oak, Fir and Poplar, the SS Bigwin can hold up to 32 passengers and 3 crew. The boat is 66’ in length, 6’ deep, with an 11’8” beam, weighing in at 25 tons. Powered by an electric motor, the batteries allow for approximately 6 hours of cruise time.
The SS Bigwin dates back to the early 1900’s when people travelled to the Muskoka Lakes aboard majestic steamships. Previously used on Lake Muskoka, in approximately 1925 Mr. Shaw purchased the Bigwin and moved it to Lake of Bays. With the decline of the resort industry, the SS Bigwin feel into disrepair resting partially submerged on the bottom of its slip at Bigwin Island. In 1991 the SS Bigwin was purchased after considerable fundraising efforts and floated to South Portage where the restoration began in 2002. In 2004 it was moved to Dorset where it now permanently docks. Today, the SS Bigwin is the last remaining ship of its fleet. To see the Bigwin cruising Lake of Bays click here.
The SS Bigwin officially launched for the public in July 2013, with its first full season being 2014.
This Saturday, June 15, 2019 H.O.L.D Community Group and SS Bigwin are sponsoring free boat cruises from 10:00 – 2:00pm, every hour on the hour from the Dwight Dock. Don’t miss your chance to enjoy a trip on this piece of Lake of Bays history. Also at the Dwight Dock from 11- 2pm a FREE BBQ- Bring the whole family.
